I greatly enjoyed Art 2. I just wish that I could have taken more art classes during high school. Because of my schedule, I took Art 1 freshman year and took Art 2 my senior year. Throughout the semester, I feel like being able to do art every day improved my artistic skills. Especially in the watercolor department. I have always loved art, drawing, and painting, but I always found it hard to find time to do this hobby and keep up with the necessary supplies. Having art as a class helped me sharpen my skills.
Watercolor painting was always something I wanted to improve upon and the watercolor unit I found to be helpful. The practice of doing watercolor every day allowed me to get used to controlling more efficiently the placement of paint and water on the page. I also thought that the final project for that unit, pouring colors and layering masking fluid, was a unique style of watercolor that made me have a new interest in that medium of painting. I also liked how there was a bit of instructional time during the water color unit where Ms. Rossi got in front of the class and showed different techniques. This gave me a place to start while creating my paintings, because otherwise, I would have jumped right in and created a big mess.
I also feel like my drawing skills got a little bit better. The pen and ink unit helped this and sketching out paintings before actually using paint all allowed me to use these skills and improve upon them. One thing about the pen and ink unit was that I felt like we did so much practice work at the beginning of the semester. I felt that this also didn't give us a lot of time for the following units, because we did so much prep work. While the prep work was helpful, I feel that we didn't necessarily need as much as we had in order to get comfortable with the pen and ink techniques. I felt that the people at my table also really helped me in this aspect, because I could ask them if something appeared off or misplaced and then I could make adjustments based on what they said.
The hardest project for me was the self portrait. I feel like my picture doesn't look that much like me, and therefore I was unsatisfied with it. I did, however learn a lot from that project about mixing colors. I think that is one of the biggest things I learned this semester - creating many colors using just the primary colors. This is something I had done only a little bit before and was able to develop the skills I needed to create multiple different colors. It also helped with creating color schemes for my pieces, allowing the colors to be more coherent within the piece. Because I could see how the colors were made, I knew what I needed to do in order to make them the hue that I wanted.
My favorite unit was probably the pen and ink unit and the acrylic painting unit. I have always loved using acrylic paint, and creating a piece in the style of an artist was a goof way to practice painting in a certain style rather than just slapping paint down on a canvas. The picture I chose to paint was challenging and I felt a little overwhelmed at first, but I am overall satisfied with the final result. I think it would have been fun to do a bit more acrylic paintings on canvases, but I understand we had limited time during the semester (especially since spring semester is a bit shorter than fall semester).
Overall, I really enjoyed Art 2 and am super excited to bring home all of my new art!
